Thinking about trying CBD vape oil?
CBD and vaping have both seen a boom in popularity recently. A report by the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis found that in 2019 there were 1.3 million CBD users in the UK, with the market projected to be worth £1 billion by 2025.
Research by the charity Action on Smoking and Health found that the number of vapers in the UK rose from 700,000 in 2012 to 3.6 million in 2019.
It’s no surprise, then, that many people are combining the two. In this article, we’ll look at the effects and possible benefits of CBD vape oil.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of a group of chemical compounds called cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant species.
CBD is generally extracted from hemp, a variant of cannabis that contains little to no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the cannabinoid responsible for the psychotropic and intoxicating effects caused by marijuana.
On the other hand, CBD does not have these effects.
Although CBD is extracted from hemp, CBD oil and hemp oil also have their differences.
Interest has been steadily growing in the potential therapeutic properties of CBD. It has been touted as a treatment for a wide range of conditions and health problems, although more research is needed to establish its efficacy.
CBD products are widely available to buy in the UK, including food supplements, cosmetics and vape products.
In 2019 a medicine containing CBD, Epidyolex, was licensed for use in the UK to treat some forms of epilepsy.
What is CBD vape oil?
CBD vape oil, also known as CBD e-liquid or CBD vape juice, is a product containing CBD that is specifically formulated for vaping.
It is similar to traditional e-liquid, but it has CBD extract added to it instead of nicotine. In addition to the CBD extract, it usually has a base liquid made up of vegetable glycerin (VG) and/or propylene glycol (PG), or medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil.
Some CBD vape juices contain terpenes, which are aromatic compounds found in many plants, including cannabis. Flavoured e-liquids also contain flavourings.
High-quality CBD vape oil should not separate into layers – it should have a uniform structure throughout.
Although CBD e-liquid is often referred to as vape oil, it is a completely different product from CBD oil or tincture. CBD oils and tinctures are designed to be ingested orally and should never be vaped – if used in this way they can pose a serious risk to health.
If you intend to vape CBD, always make sure that the product you’re using is specifically designed for vaping. Check the label carefully – it should mention vaping, vape juice, e-liquid or similar. If it doesn’t, it should not be vaped.
So, is CBD vape oil legal in the UK? Yes – CBD products, including CBD vape oil, are legal in the UK as long as they don’t contain THC.
THC, along with most other cannabinoids, is a controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. However, CBD is not a controlled substance. As long as a CBD product contains less than 1mg of THC per pack, it’s legal.
There are some restrictions on how CBD products can be marketed. For example, CBD companies are not allowed to sell their products as medicines or advertise any health benefits.
In addition, from 31 March 2021, all CBD products must be covered by a validated novel food application in order to stay on the shelves.

CBD vape oil potential benefits
CBD is available in a variety of different forms, including oils and tinctures, pills and capsules, gummies, topical creams, beverages, and beauty products – but vaping remains one of the most popular ways to consume CBD.
The main advantage of vaping CBD is that it is absorbed into the bloodstream much faster when it is inhaled compared to when it is digested through the stomach or applied to the skin.
This makes vaping the most efficient way to take CBD and means you will feel the effects sooner after consuming it than with other products.

Another suggested benefit of CBD vape oil is its potential therapeutic effects. A 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) report suggests that CBD has pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties. The report also found evidence that CBD can reduce seizures.
Vaping CBD oil could also help those with nicotine addictions. In a small study lasting a week one group of participants, who were told to use an inhaler of CBD when they had the urge to smoke, saw a drop of around 40% in the number of cigarettes typically smoked.
CBD vape oil effects (current research)
Research is currently underway around the world to improve our understanding of CBD’s potential to treat symptoms of common health conditions.
Although greater research is still needed, a 2017 WHO report suggested that CBD may be of benefit for a variety of conditions.
These conditions include anxiety, insomnia, arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis (MS) – among others.
Are there any side effects?
CBD is generally acknowledged to be well tolerated by humans and has relatively low toxicity, even in high doses.
The effects of CBD vape juice will be different for everyone – however, some reported side effects include:
- Mood changes
- Decreased appetite
Again, if you experience or are worried about any side effects, speak to your doctor.
Can vaping CBD get you high?
In short, no – vaping CBD will not get you high.
Unlike THC, CBD does not have any psychotropic or intoxicating effects. As mentioned previously, CBD products do not contain THC and therefore will not cause you to feel high.
How much CBD should I vape?
There are no official guidelines on CBD vaping dosages – the ideal amount will vary from person to person.
The CBD content will also vary between different e-liquids. The label should clearly state the total CBD content of your chosen product, usually in milligrams (mg). Steer clear of any products that don’t tell you this information.
When you first begin, it’s a good idea to start off with a low dose of CBD and gradually increase the amount over time until you achieve the desired effect.
This will prevent you from increasing your tolerance too quickly and will enable you to find a dosage that works for you.

It’s also a good idea to talk to your doctor first and follow any recommendations they give you.
CBD vape oil effects and benefits: Conclusion
As CBD vape oil continues to grow in popularity, many will wonder what are the effects of using CBD vape oil and if there are any benefits of it.
Research is currently underway to help answer both of these questions, however initial studies have yielded interesting results.
From suggestions it could provide benefits to sufferers of conditions like Parkinson’s disease to helping people wean off cigarettes, this will continue to be an area of interest for scientists and the wider CBD-using community.
