CBD Skincare: 6 Of The Best CBD Skincare Products In The UK Today

CBD has become a buzzword in the beauty industry, with an explosion of CBD skincare and cosmetics now available. You may have heard of people taking CBD orally or by vaping or may have used it yourself. But what’s the deal with putting it on your skin?

Here’s our rundown of six of the best CBD skincare products to buy in the UK, plus some handy information to help you make an informed choice.

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a chemical compound derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. It is one of a number of compounds called cannabinoids found in cannabis.

CBD is extracted from hemp, a variety of cannabis that contains little to no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the cannabinoid that causes psychotropic and intoxicating effects (a ‘high’).

For more information, read our in-depth guide outlining what is CBD.

Does CBD skincare have any side effects?

Firstly, CBD skincare can’t get you high. To be legal, CBD products must contain less than 1mg of THC per pack, meaning they won’t have any intoxicating effects.

A 2017 report by the World Health Organization stated that ‘CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile’.

However, some participants in studies have reported side effects when taking CBD, including drowsiness, diarrhoea, mood changes and decreased appetite.

These effects may be a result of long-term use or interactions with other medications the person is taking.

It’s not yet well established how much CBD is absorbed through the skin, or whether these side effects could occur with CBD skincare. We recommend talking to your doctor before using a CBD product.

Are there any regulations around CBD skincare?

Like all cosmetics in the UK, CBD skin products require a Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR). However, there are no specific regulations relating to CBD cosmetics – apart from the legal requirements that relate to CBD products in general

These include not containing THC and not making any medicinal claims. For example, CBD brands are not allowed to make claims like ‘heals skin’ or ‘fights eczema’.

In February 2021, the EU added CBD as a legal cosmetic ingredient to its CosIng guidelines, a database of cosmetic regulations that sets out authorised and unlawful ingredients. Until this revision, only synthetic CBD was expressly allowed as a cosmetic ingredient.

The regulatory change means that plant-derived CBD can be used in cosmetics as a skin conditioner, skin protectant, antioxidant and anti-sebum ingredient.

Although the UK is no longer in the EU, this is a promising step for the CBD cosmetic industry that paves the way for a more harmonious European CBD market.

How much CBD is in skincare products?

The amount of CBD in skincare will vary from product to product.

Some CBD products state the CBD content on the label. However, companies aren’t obligated to do this, and won’t be breaking any laws if their products only contain minimal amounts of CBD.

Want to play it safe? Your best bet is to stick with products that tell you the CBD content. This will be stated either in milligrams or as a percentage.

CBD vs hemp seed oil: What’s the difference?

If you’ve spent time browsing CBD skincare products, you may have come across some that mention hemp seed oil. With this in mind, it’s important to know that hemp seed oil is not the same as CBD oil.

While hemp seed oil has benefits of its own, if you’re trying to buy CBD skincare you probably want to know you’re getting the real deal.

If you’re not sure whether a product has CBD in it, check the ingredients list. It should say ‘CBD’ or ‘cannabidiol’, or sometimes ‘broad-spectrum hemp oil’ or ‘phytocannabinoid-rich/PCR hemp oil’. These are all recognised names for CBD. If it says ‘cannabis sativa seed oil’ then this is hemp seed oil, not CBD.
